Rare Element Field Expedition to Mongolia

Adrian Finch has just returned from a two week field expedition to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia to look at the rare element deposits. Adrian was invited by the HiTech AlkCarb consortium to take part in its field visits led by consortium member Professor Jindřich Kynický of the Mendel University of Brno in the Czech Republic. Adrian joined a team of experts from across the world looking at rare element deposits at two sites. Mushgai Khudak in the Western Gobi is a potential rare earth prospect with a mixture of carbonatite, apatitite and fluoritite intrusives enriched in rare earths. Khan Bogd in the Eastern Gobi is a peralkaline granite with significant enrichment in Zr and Nb. Material from the trip is expected to form part of Masters projects at St Andrews.
