A-team at Society of Economic Geologists 2023 in London

Four members of the research group attended the SEG2023 conference in London between 26-29 August 2023. Adrian was also asked to be a mentor for Kathy Kwanang, who is a PhD student from the University of Yaoundé in Cameroon. Elissa Gillies and Huanhuan Wu also attended the conference from St Andrews.

Anna Szreter presented a poster entitled: “How fluids make or break critical metal deposits: The IvigtĂ»t Cryolite Body, SW Greenland” which discussed the origins of the unique cryolite body at Ivittuut and its relationship with mineralisation in other Gardar bodies. Anna’s poster was chosen as the best student poster in the European Metal Resources Session for which she received a certificate and a cash award. Well done to Anna!

Amy Walsh (MSc student) presented a poster entitled “A Study of the Gold to Sulfide Ratio of the Cononish Au-Ag Deposit, Tyndrum, Scotland” in collaboration with Rachael Paul at Scotgold Resources. Amy had completed a dissertation with Scotgold on the properties and mineralogy of the gold-bearing veins. Another Masters student from St Andrews, Elissa Gillies, also attended but did not present a poster.

Adrian gave an oral presentation to the session on European Metal Resources on the group’s work on the Hf and Nd isotopes of the Gardar Province in South Greenland. The work was a collaboration between Adrian, Charlie Beard at Cambridge, ex-Masters student Rob Webster, as well as ex A-team members Will Hutchison and Anouk Borst. The title of the talk was “Mantle Source Enrichment in the Evolution of one of Europe’s largest Rare Element Provinces – the Gardar Province, South Greenland” and looked at the reasons why some parts of the Gardar were mineralised and others were not.

Adrian also welcomed PhD student Kathy Kwanang from the University of Yaoundé in Cameroon. She was visiting SEG for the first time and Adrian had been asked to mentor her as part of the SEG2023 Mentoring Programme.

Kathy met other members of the team and spoke with Adrian about careers in Exploration and Academia. The conference was also attended by Huanhuan Wu who arrived in St Andrews too late to make a presentation but attended on behalf of the group.

Amy, Anna and Kathy had the generous support of SEG to attend the conference.
